When is the best time for a pregnancy photoshoot?

This mom came to her pregnancy photoshoot in her 33rd week of pregnancy .

When is actually the best time for a maternity photoshoot?

When is the perfect time for a maternity photoshoot? As a maternity photographer, I hear this question almost daily.

And there is so much more behind this question than just an appointment in the calendar.

It's about your body. About your transformation. About this quiet, powerful phase between becoming and arriving. Perhaps you're standing in front of the mirror this morning, running your hand over your belly, thinking: "Is it round enough for maternity photos yet?" Or: "Should I wait a little longer?" Or even: "I don't feel photogenic enough right now."

The truth is: pregnancy photography isn't just a photo shoot. It's a conscious moment of pause. A statement. A decision for yourself. Your body is doing incredible things. It carries life. It changes, stretches, adapts – with a precision that's almost impossible to comprehend. And that's precisely why it deserves to be seen in all its elegance and dignity.

But when is this moment at its most beautiful? When are maternity photos taken that not only show your belly, but your presence?

I have described here why this phase is also a journey to yourself.

Problem: Too early, too late – and the uncertainty in between

Many women book their maternity photoshoot far too late – or they hesitate so long that they end up missing it altogether. It often starts innocently enough. "I'll wait a little longer, my belly will only get bigger." "I still have time." "I don't feel ready yet." And suddenly you're in your 36th or 37th week. Your shoes are pinching. You're sleeping less. Your energy levels are fluctuating. You're retaining water. And then the baby might decide to arrive early.

I've experienced it: planned maternity photoshoots that couldn't take place because the baby arrived sooner than expected. Another issue is body image. Some women think they first have to reach a certain shape, be rounder, look "perfect." But pregnancy photography isn't about perfection. It's about authenticity, attitude, and inner connection.

Another problem: lack of planning. Many women underestimate the high demand for professional maternity photoshoots – especially on weekends and when a makeup artist is booked. The result? Stress. Uncertainty. Or missed opportunities. And that's precisely the crux of the matter: the question of the best time isn't just logistical, it's emotional.

Solution promise: The ideal moment for your pregnancy photoshoot

The perfect time for a pregnancy photoshoot is, in most cases, between the 28th and 34th week of pregnancy.

Why?

During this phase, your belly is beautifully round and clearly visible. Your silhouette has that harmonious line that looks so expressive in maternity photography. At the same time, you usually still feel physically flexible enough to assume different poses.

What happens if you wait too long?

Many women think: "I'll wait a little longer, my belly will only get bigger."

Yes, that's true. But from the 36th week onwards, many things become more strenuous.

• Sitting and standing up takes more energy.

• Fatigue is increasing

• The due date is approaching – and babies don't always stick to plans.

I've had mothers who had planned their photoshoot – and then the baby came early.

Therefore, my advice as a photographer with over 22 years of experience in pregnancy photography in Zurich is: Plan your baby bump photoshoot a little earlier rather than too late.

For example: A mother in her 39th week. She was beautiful – but she was exhausted. Every pose took effort and we had to take many breaks.

Both photoshoots were touching. But the earlier one had more lightness.

This is not dogma. It is experience.

First pregnancy vs. subsequent pregnancies

With a first pregnancy, the bump often shows a little later. In these cases, I usually recommend weeks 30 to 34. With a second or third pregnancy, the bump may appear earlier. In this case, a maternity photoshoot can be ideal between weeks 27 and 30. With twins or multiples, everything shifts forward again – weeks 26 to 30 are often optimal.

Your individual timetable (roadmap)

  1. Get in touch during the second trimester.

  2. Together we will define your ideal timeframe.

  3. Styling, makeup artist and set are planned.

  4. You can relax and look forward to your day.

This creates no pressure. No last-minute stress. Instead, it creates anticipation.

Pregnancy photography is most beautiful when you feel supported – not rushed.

I remember a client in her 28th week of pregnancy. She was unsure whether her bump was showing "enough" yet. During the shoot, she wore a bodysuit and earrings from my studio's collection. When she saw the finished maternity photos, she said, "I didn't know I could look like that."

The best time for a pregnancy photoshoot is usually between the 28th and 34th week – adapted to your individual situation.

Why exactly then?

• Your belly is nicely rounded and visible • You usually still feel mobile • Water retention is often still moderate • In many cases, your energy levels are more stable than at the very end

This phase is characterized by a special mix of anticipation, calm, and presence. Your belly is definitely there – but you're not yet in "final sprint mode".

And that's exactly what you can see in the pictures.

Years later, all the women look at their maternity photos and say, "I'm so glad I did it." None of them say, "I wish I hadn't."

Are you currently pregnant and wondering when your perfect moment is?

Then don't wait any longer. Write to me and tell me which week you're in.

Your maternity photoshoot is more than just an appointment. It's a conscious decision for yourself.

And maybe now is the perfect time. 💛

Warm regards

Sonja
